Artist: Jane Callister (British, b. 1963)
Callister was born on the Isle of Man. She graduated from the Cheltenham School of Art with a BA in 1987 and subsequently moved to the United States to take up a scholarship at the University of Idaho. In 1994 she received her MFA in Painting from UNLV. She is currently on the faculty at the University of California, Santa Barbara. “Callister's early, semi-representational work used suggestive materials and sometimes sexually provocative imagery to investigate and generate pleasure,” wrote a reviewer for the Pittsburgh City Paper in 2006. “This has developed into her concern with the fun and sensuality of the paint itself.” Callister has represented Las Vegas in several group shows: The Vegas Show at Rosamund Felsen Gallery, Los Angeles; Las Vegas Diaspora at the Laguna Art Museum and Ultralounge: the Return of Social Space (with Cocktails), an exhibition that travelled to Texas and Florida. The last two shows were curated by David Hickey, who taught at UNLV while Callister was studying there.
