Artist: Frank Stella (American, b. 1936)
Born on May 12, 1936 in Malden, MA, Stella went on to study history at Princeton University before moving to New York in 1958. He is heralded for creating abstract paintings that bear no pictorial illusions or psychological or metaphysical references in twentieth-century painting. He is known for painting, printmaking, sculpture, architecture. Active during many art movements including: modernism, minimal art, abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction, abstract illusionism, lyrical abstraction, hard-edge painting, shaped canvas painting, color field painting.
As of 2015, Stella lives in Greenwich Village and keeps an office there but commutes on weekdays to his studio in Rock Tavern, New York.
In 2010, Frank Stella was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama.
