Artist: David Bottini (American, b. 1945)
Bottini was born in Santa Clara County, California. He received his MFA from his local university, San Jose State, where he studied under the sculptors Fletcher Benton and John Battenberg. Bettini’s early constructivist sculptures, made generally from flat shapes, developed during the 1970s into a more three-dimensional, abstract style with cubist elements. “It seems sort of archaic,” he told the Santa Clara Weekly in 2014, “but I rejected volume heavily, which is a big part of sculpture. It separates sculpture from painting ... I thought it was too easy to replicate. Anyone can learn to replicate so I tried to set up situations that were as difficult as possible ... I became very two-dimensional, yet freestanding, making it three-dimensional.”
