As was often the case in posters that depicted the enemy, the leader of the county came to stand for the country itself. Here, Benito Mussolini (Italy), Adolf Hitler (Germany), and Hideki Tojo (Japan) have mutated into semihuman creatures, notably a monkey, a wolf, and a rat. The use of caricatures and the use of stereotypes went hand in hand as popular and effective techniques.
