"My work was prompted by three phrases from three poems: from ""Farm Island,"" the phrase ""the flat plain sky to sky""; from ""Island Woman,"" the phrase ""choppy tides of change""; and from ""Farm Islanders,"" the phrase, ""rooted in the loam and open spaces."" The farm depicted is based on photographs of the farm near Oakland, Nebraska where I grew up. The figure is based on a photograph my father took of my mother one day early in their life together; she was standing in a field of oats."
