No Sameness Marks Her Days

"Island Woman rings true to my contemporary experience. In March 2020, my grown children returned to my kitchen table, one from Boston to finish college remotely and the other from Louisville, KY, to teach her sixth grade English classes. I became a version of Island Woman, the welcoming, nurturing, brownie-baking mistress of a vibrant safe space defined by authenticity. At that time, I experienced a sea change in my studio as well. My April 4 solo gallery show opening in Chicago was cancelled and I had not yet planned for my next project. So I used what I had: lots of studio time and bouquets of grocery store flowers. Those flowers were important not only to my art but to making a joyful space for my family to gather around the table to, yes, hear confession, feed my flock, celebrate each day, and steer them through the choppy tides of change. For my Island Woman mixed media pieces, the vase of blooms is placed in context on a polka dotted tablecloth against a simple colorful wall."
