Typically when I work in ceramics I go in without a plan and let the clay talk to me. My process starts with an entire day or two dedicated to simply throwing shapes. I start with shapes I am comfortable with and gradually start to push the limits of what I can accomplish with clay. I rarely have a finished product in mind when I start the process and I think about the surface decoration while the pieces dry up for trimming. For this particular pot I started with a fairly standard large bellied pot with a small opening and then just poked little divots out from the inside. I then decided to decorate the pot with a rainbow looping around all the bumps of the pot. I associate this curving rainbow with my discovery of my own sexuality. I currently identify as queer and nonbinary but as someone raised in Catholic school it was not an easy or straightforward discovery. It was confusing and messy but still beautiful.
