The goal of my installation is to create an immersive experience that extends beyond visual stimulation and encourages a deeper level of engagement and contemplation. With the aim of prompting the viewer to reflect on their own experiences and beliefs, the installation invites a more meaningful and personal connection.
The installation comprises several elements, including a mirror, a wheelbarrow filled with dingy potato sack bags, a pair of painted Timberland Carhart boots, a potted plant, a shovel, and an 8-inch figure of myself standing on a pile of bricks. The bricks symbolize the building process, both of oneself and of the surrounding world, brick by brick.
The mirror serves as a tool to encourage self-reflection, inviting participants to engage with the installation in a contemplative manner. In addition, textile garments such as overalls and T-shirts, covered in paint from murals painted in the past five years, are included to represent the work that has been done. The installation also features unhung paintings, symbolizing the work that needs to be done and the ongoing process of growth and development.
To create the installation, I utilized a variety of techniques and materials. The process of turning the garments into sculptures was a delicate one, and I took care to ensure that they had the desired form and motion. The 8-inch figure of myself was created using SLS printing and coloring techniques, while the mirror was prefabricated and took 2-3 days to construct. With the use of the overalls being a part of the initial concept, the installation was a five-year planned project utilizing my garments as a form of textile art. The idea came from wearing painted clothing outside of my art studio and people finding interest in it. I wanted to pay homage to that moment and encapsulate it in this installation.
