Olaf Wieghorst is often called the "Dean of Western Painters." He was born in Denmark but emigrated to the U.S. at the age of eighteen, infatuated with the American West. He spent most of his career on horseback as a cowboy, U.S. cavalryman, and later mounted policeman; and he roamed the West during its transition from open range to the modern world. His reverence for the Navajo is evident in this series, which depicts the story of a Navajo family living in the grandeur of Arizona's Monument Valley.
