Wackerle enjoys both plein air and studio painting - more abstract than representational - motivated by light and shadow. His outdoor painting process consists of scouting a good location, at times hiking at great length, selecting dramatic lighting conditions, editing the subject matter for composition, and selecting a color palette that achieves a striking, abstract impression. He often paints ala prima (fast), and sometimes uses his small plein air paintings as inspiration for larger works.
