In the 1890s Vos traveled to Fort Totten Indian Reservation to paint Sioux and Chippewa Indians. Vos titled this work Chippewa although he posed his subject in a breast plate more usually associated with the Plains Indians. He included this work in his exhibition “Portrait Gallery of Exotic Types” that traveled throughout America in the early 20th century.
