  • Artist: Steven Meckler (American, b. 1956)

From artist's website:

I traded my guitar for a camera when I was in high school and I’ve never looked back. Growing up in Brooklyn and walking the streets with my camera I had plenty of visuals to cut my teeth on. I feel the time I spent doing street photography taught me the value of being in the moment and the importance of storytelling.

After graduating from the State University of New York at Stony Brook with a degree in biology and a minor in photography, my first job was as a medical photographer at Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York. I moved to Tucson, Arizona a few years later and work all over the beautiful Southwest.
Collaboration is essential, whether you’re connecting with your subject in a portrait session or working with a team on a production shoot. I don’t pick up my camera until I know why I am taking a photo.

To paraphrase Richard Avedon, if a day goes by without doing something related to photography I feel like I’ve neglected something essential in my life. Making photos, teaching photography, mentoring - are all part of who I am. I can’t imagine life without photography.
