  • Artist: Frederick Hambly (American, b. 1937)

From About the Artist on the Friends of Western Art card:

Frederick Hambly is a true painter of the West, a painter of Arizona. Depictions of horses, cattle, cowboys, images the old West, paintings that shape the new West, are all in his blood. Frederick is a native fifth generation Arizonan. He was born in the town of Winkleman and grew up in Tucson. His great-great Grandfather was sheriff of Tucson in 1867, served three sessions in the territorial legislature, and ran for the first Congressional seat in 1870. Continuing the old West tradition, following generations were involved in ranching and mining. "I don't believe I could paint anything else. It must be in my genes."

Frederick has shown in galleries from Laguna Beach, CA to Cody, WY. He has participated in juried shows from California to North Dakota, and his work has hung in such institutions as The Phippen Museum and the High Plains Museum. "I consider myself more of an illustrator than a painter. It's been the figure in my work since childhood, and the horse and cowboy suit me fine -- The horse and cowboy in a ground-sky dichotomy." He has been influenced by such diverse artists as Whistler, Velasquez, Remington, and Gericault.
