Red Wing pottery originated in 1861 in Red Wing, Minnesota, when German immigrant John Paul began making stoneware using local clay. The company went through several name changes before becoming Red Wing Union Stoneware in 1906 and later Red Wing Potteries, Inc. in 1936. It was known for producing both utilitarian stoneware and later, art pottery and dinnerware like the popular "Bob White" pattern. Production of these wares ended in 1967 after a strike.
