Ericsson's history in mobile telephony began in 1956 with its first "mobile" phone, a 40-kilogram suitcase-sized device, and evolved to the first handheld model, the Hotline Pocket, in 1987. The company later merged its mobile phone division with Sony in 2001 to form Sony Ericsson, which was fully acquired by Sony in 2014.
