Kiyoshi Saito (1907-1997) was a prominent Japanese sōsaku hanga (creative print) artist known for blending traditional Japanese techniques with Western modernist styles like Cubism and Expressionism. Born in Fukushima, he moved to Tokyo to study painting and became a self-taught woodblock printmaker. He gained international fame after winning the Grand Prize at the inaugural São Paulo Biennale in 1951, a breakthrough for Japanese printmakers. His most famous series, "Winter in Aizu," depicts the stark beauty of his hometown.
