An "aala" is a wall niche, traditional in Indian architecture, primarily used for holding oil lamps (\(diyas\)), but also for storing items like books or for displaying shrines. These niches have been carved into walls for centuries, serving functional purposes like lighting and decoration. Their use evolved over time, transitioning from a practical way to hold lamps to serving as shrines and decorative features as electricity became more common.
