If A Prayer is a hymn, then A Ritual is the ceremonial dance that goes with it. While the abstraction prevents us from seeing the entirety of anything, figurative elements come and go like choreography, suggesting a moment of transcendental significance. These gestural qualities are particularly apparent in the white brushstrokes of the foreground. Broad and opaque, with these we sense a body that moves with purpose and intention. Elsewhere, the palette is both richly coloured (crimson red, vibrant pink, papal violet) and quietly reverent (off-white, fawn, French grey). In this way, it is emblematic of the lived experience of rituals: on the one hand an outward spectacle or performance; and on the other a moment of private introspection.
