Item description: This painting is depicting some of the outstanding Paiute Indians who lived in Nevada and who tried to alleviate the injustices and cruelties that were dealt them. Sarah Winnemucca traveled extensively to lecture on the conditions of the Indians. Her grandfather, Chief Truckee Winnemucca, her father, Old Chief Winnemucca, her brother, Natchez Winnemucca and Na-Ma-Ga, Young Chief Winnemucca, were leaders of the Paiutes and are portrayed in the painting with a moccasin as the background. The name Winnemucca means "one moccasin". Sarah's husband and constant companion, H. Hopkins, is pictured in the tree. The peace pipe is significant in the portrayal of the composition.
