In Storage
In the 1970’s or 80’s, Walton wrote on this painting’s back, “first
plainly original breakthrough since one year of Van Gogh influence
following Chicago show in Nov. ‘36. Use of color and shape
interpretation entered in this painting.”
The“Chicago show,”at the Renaissance Society, University of Chicago,
came about because its leader, in town for a divorce, saw Walton’s
work in the window of Brundidge’s Art Supply on First Street. In
Chicago, Walton spent days studying the Post-Impressionists at the
Art Institute. He said he worked out Seurat’s color theory for himself
studying A Sunday on La Grande Jatte.
