Artist: John Roloff
Date: 1985
Medium: Steel and concrete
Credit Line: Collection of the John and Geraldine Lilley Museum of Art
Item description: A steel structure with encrusted lightweight concrete in the shape of a fish head.
A reconstruction of part of the framework for the kiln/furnace project, Ancient Shoreline/Island For Lake Lahontan, 1985, a temporary work installed at the University of Nevada, Reno in 1985. This project represents a "conversation" between the Ice Ages of northern Nevada (the "snow" covered fish/fossil) and the contemporary climate (three alder trees). Over time the growth of the trees engage the structure of the image. This is the second of three works of the Lahontan Group I-III, conceived and constructed as an elegy for the ice age Lake Lahontan.
