Purvis Young is a self-taught artist from Miami, Florida, born in 1943. His work is directly inspired by his lived experiences in Overton, both as a young African American, and from the evolution of poverty within the streets. He is interested in depicting the great economic divide between the ways of life of the rich and the poor. Young’s materials of choice are found objects and materials like plywood, scrap metal, and book pages, deepening his connection to Overton. The symbolism and composition in Young’s work is derived from folklore, mural movements in the 1960’s, portraiture, incarceration, and his surroundings, among other things. His paintings are vastly sought after by museums as well as private collectors. This is due to the unmatched visual language he creates through his imagery. Purvis Young’s mixed-media work is housed in the American Folk Art Museum in New York, the de Young Museum of Art in San Francisco, the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C.
