Artist: Walasse Ting
Walasse Ting is a Chinese-American graphic artist, poet, painter, and sculptor born in 1929 in Shanghai, China and died in New York in 2010. The work of Ting is characterized by bright fluorescent colors in the style of Abstract Expressionism and Fauvism. He often uses non-representational colors to depict figures such as female nudes, animals, still life scenes, and outdoor scenes. Ting’s work has been acclaimed for its vibrant colors and appealing, individualistic nature. Not only is Walasse Ting recognized for his paintings, but he is also well known for his poetry; he is the author of 13 books coupling his poetry and art. Ting is mostly a self-taught artist, but he briefly attended the Art Academy in Shanghai before deciding to move to Paris in 1952. It was there that he met with artists within the CoBrA movement, a group of artists from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam that made controversial work inspired by the art of children. This influenced his work and can be seen in his abstract style. Today, Ting’s work is housed in museum collections in the Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Tate Modern, and more.
