Artist: Toshi Yoshida (Japanese, 1911-1995)
Born on July 25, 1911, Toshi Yoshida was a printmaker and painter, and was the son of the famous landscape artist, Hiroshi Yoshida. Toshi was best known for his association with the sosaku-hanga movement. During this movement, artists were known to draw, carve, and print their own works without the help of assistants. Toshi learned much of his technique from his father, and in 1930, they went on sight-seeing and sketching trips in India and Southeast Asia. After his father's death in 1950, Toshi went on to create abstract works for the first time. The respect he had for his father kept him from turning to abstraction earlier. His works are included in several collections such as, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Toshi died at ninety-three years old on July 1, 1995 in Tokyo, Japan.
