Artist: Shigeru Izumi (Japanese, 1922-1995)
Born in Osaka Japan in 1922, Shigeru Izumi is known for his mixed-media works and contributions to arts education. Izumi studied at Nakanoshima School of Western Art, and the Osaka City Kogei School. The style of his work has been influenced by his travel, first to New York in 1959, later to Paris in 1963, and eventually back to Japan in 1968. Izumi’s earlier work exemplifies whimsical themes and strong attention to figures. It then transformed into a more abstract, deconstructed version of reality, and he began to explore mediums such as etching, lithograph, painting, and silkscreen. His later work is interested in abstract geometric shapes that reflect his intrigue in both organic and in-organic materials. His travels are linked to his background in arts education as well; in 1951 he founded the Osaka demokurato bijutsu kyokai or the Democratic Artists Association in Japan with two other artists, Ei-Q and Yoshio Hayakawa. Later he ventured to New York to become a guest professor at Pratt Graphic Art Center. His work is featured in many museums around the world such as: the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the Tokushima Modern Art Museum.
