Artist: Reinier (Zeeman) Nooms (Dutch, 1623-1664)
Reinier Nooms was a painter, draftsman, and a renowned graphic artist. Many of his pieces were of ships, naval battles, foreign ports and cityscapes. His first drawing was made in 1643, where it depicts the rear of the Amsterdam’s Old City Hall. There are 80 paintings and 177 etchings known to have been produced over his career that is estimated to have expanded over 14 until his death in 1664.
It is believed that Nooms was a professional seaman because he signed his works either with R. Zeeman or Reinier Zeeman. His drawings display someone with intimate knowledge of ships to create such details within his pieces. Nooms avoided the use of bright colors in his paintings, instead he would used blue-gray tones and whites to animate his figures.
Nooms published two series of etchings: Receuil de plusiers Nauires, et Païsages faits après le naturel par R. Zeeman 1650 and Quelque Nauires desseigner & graver par Remy Seeman Ao1652, depicting views of the French capital and its surroundings.
Nooms returned to Amsterdam in 1652, was the beginning of a collaboration with printmaker, Cornelis Danckerts and his son. During this time, Nooms created many compelling print series that provide information about Amsterdam, its harbor and Dutch waterways.
His paintings and prints found enthusiastic buyers among Amsterdam’s merchant community and others who derived their living from maritime pursuits.
