Artist: Navin Rawanchaikul (Thai, b. 1971)
Navin Rawanchaikul combines traditions of high and low art in his work which references pop culture, manga, Hollywood movie posters, and comic book aesthetics. Rawanchaikul is interested in audience participation in his practice, incorporating visual narratives from the everyday people depicted such as taxi drivers or elderly townspeople. He studied at Chiang Mai University (B.F.A., 1993) and founded Navin Production Co., Ltd., in 1994 which serves as an artistic production company under which much of his work is made, and also functions as an artist collective. Solo exhibitions of the artist’s work have been held at institutions such as Tang Contemporary Art, Hong Kong; Ullens Center For Contemporary Art, Beijing; Valentine Willie Fine Art, Singapore; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; MoMA P.S.1 in collaboration with Public Art Fund, New York; and the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver. In 2011, Rawanchaikul represented Thailand at the Venice Biennale.
