Artist: Marc Chagall (Russian-French-Jewish, 1887-1985)
Marc Chagall a painter, printmaker, and designer who composed his images based on emotional and poetic associations, rather than on rules of pictorial logic. He worked in various media include sets for plays and ballets, etchings illustrating the Bible, and stained-glass windows. After learning the elements of drawing at school, he studied painting in the studio of a local realist and in 1907 went to St. Petersburg, where he studied intermittently for three years. The four years of his first stay in the French capital are often considered Chagall’s best phase and would continue for the next 60 years painting.
