Artist: Lucile Spire Bruner (1909-1998)
Lucile Spire Bruner was a founder of the Las Vegas Art League. Bruner studied fine arts at the University of Oklahoma settling in Las Vegas in 1947. The Las Vegas Art League ultimately became the Las Vegas Art Museum. Bruner also helped organize the Las Vegas Branch of the National League of American Pen Women, a group of professional artists, writers and composers that is still active today.
Bruner was interested in documenting women's role in early pioneer life. Her "Heritage Series," of 26 oil paintings done between 1978 and 1991, chronicled her childhood in Kansas.
Bruner taught high school art and traveled to remote Nevada schools via "bookmobile" to teach. An elementary school in Las Vegas was named the Lucile Spire Bruner elementary school in her honor, and she was given an honorary PHD by the University of Las Vegas. Her paintings are included in private collections throughout the United States.
