Artist: Katsukawa Shunko
Katsukawa Shunko was born in 1743 in Edo (Tokyo), Japan where he lived and worked his entire life as a painter and Ukiyo-e printmaker. He was a pupil and one of the top students of the famous Ukiyo-e master Katsukawa Shunsho, and later became the leader of the Katsukawa school. Shunko mainly focused on actor prints and had originated the Ukiyo-e genre of Okubi-e, which consisted of close-up portraits showing only the head or the head and shoulder torso. Shunko also preferred to create his prints in the hosoban format (5 x 13in or 14.5 x 33cm). His works are included in several museum collections, a few include the British Museum, London, UK, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Tokyo National Museum.
