Artist: Hewitt C. Wells (1915-1989)
Born in Washington, D.C., he shared with his father, from early boyhood, the love of the out-of-doors. From Choate School, Wallingford, Connecticut, he entered Princeton, graduating summa cum laude with the Stuyvesant Prize in Architecture, which afforded him two years post gradate work in the profession he had always dreamed of being part of.
During World War II, Mr. Wells served as an officer on the Navy Destroyer U.S.S. Bailey, He painted a dairy of the Pacific Action. Of the original collection of 300 watercolors, all but eight are in the Naval Historical Foundation in Washington, D.C. The eight are in his own collection and are shown by special arrangement on loan exhibits.
Hewitt Wells specializes in fishing scenes. He accepts commissions from sportsmen or organizations as well as painting the numerous scenes from areas where he has fished from Alaska, throughout the west, Canada, and in the east.
Mr. Wells is a member of the Society of Western Artists, and the Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club of San Francisco, the Nevada Artists Association and an officer of Trout Unlimited, Nevada Chapter, an organization directed to improve ecology and preserve the habitat of the wild trout.
