Artist: Frank Stack (American, b. 1937)
Frank Stack is a contemporary American painter, printmaker and cartoonist. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Academie Grande Chaumiere, Paris. Frank Stack served both as an Instructor and Professor of Art at the University of Missouri from 1963 to 2002.
Frank Huntington Stack first came to public attention in the early 1960's as a pioneer of 'underground' comics. Stack worked under the pseudonym of 'Foolbert Sturgeon' to avoid relation between his work and his religious cartoons, "The Adventures of Jesus".
While 'Foolbert Sturgeon' continued to create comics throughout the twentieth century, 'Frank Stack' developed a reputation as a 'serious' painter and printmaker. Known mostly for his landscapes, figure studies and nudes his work has been exhibited nationally since 1970. His art has also been included in exhibitions in France, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Turkey and South Korea. In 1997 the book, Naked Glory, a Collection of Nudes by Frank Stack, was published.
