Donald (Don) Allen Kerr was born on February 21, 1930, in Saginaw, Michigan. He served proudly as an Army Intelligence Officer in Germany during the Korean War. In 1952, he married fellow artist, Enid Albertson and together they raised their four children. He later met and married his current spouse of 40 years, Sharon Sandberg. An accomplished painter and passionate educator Don dedicated over 30 years of his life to art education. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa and a BA from Michigan State University. First, Kerr taught at Ohio State University and University of Nevada-Reno for several years until he accepted a position at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) in September of 1970.
During his tenure at GVSU, Kerr played a major role in the humble beginnings of their robust art program. He served as Department Chair and Director of Summer School for England and France. Professor Kerr taught at GVSU until 1999. Post-retirement, he continued teaching Drawing, Art Appreciation, and Japanese Art History at Aquinas College. A scholar in the subject of Perception, Don exhibited, lectured, read papers and taught, both nationally and internationally in London, UK; Europe and Japan. He was also appointed Scholar-in-Residence at The Japan Center for Michigan Universities, Hikone, Japan.
Kerr passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife, Sharon, and his daughters and granddaughter in the Heritage Hill area of Grand Rapids, Michigan, very early Thursday, December 21, 2017.
