Artist: Carol Maratta (Italian, 1625-1713)
Carlo Maratta or Maratti, a prominent Italian Baroque painter, restorer, and architect known for his classicizing style and influential work in Rome. A student of Andrea Sacchi, Maratta was a major figure in late Baroque Classicism, creating grandiose religious works, portraits, and mythological paintings for ecclesiastical and royal patrons, including Louis XIV. He served as president of the Accademia di San Luca. He worked for prominent clients in Rome, including various popes.
