Artist: Charles Amand-Durand (French, 1831-1905)
Amand Durand, a French painter and engraver, had the difficult task of renewing original copper plates designs made by Rembrandt, Drurer, Beham and others from the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. It was the Louvre that gave Durand this important task, and it was not always easy, but he accomplished this by using silver, amalgam, steel, mercury, copper and asphalt from the Dead Sea. He was so talented that the project became band because it was the same process that France used to print money. The only difference between the original print and the ones that Durand made, was the paper. Durand used high quality paper would allow for the prints to be preserved for future generations.
