Relief Lamps of Inner Warmth (Pyra) by Roman de Salvo Image: This lamp was actually cut in half and mounted on the wall to give a relief, or raised from the wall, effect. Roman de Salvo likes to take ordinary, domestic objects and transform them into something different and more exciting. He transforms this bulky and space-occupying object into something that can stand on its own, as well as giving the room a more eccentric and humorous feel. Roman explores double meanings and wordplay in his work, as the act of hanging the lamp on the wall “relieves” the table of having to support it. He essentially creates a relief sculpture that relieves another object of its duty. Another double meaning in this piece can be seen as he takes an object that was already in the home to display as an art piece, which then in turn can be bought and put back into the home.
