Artist Statement
I’ve long been fascinated by glasses—not merely as tools for vision correction but as symbolic mediums reflecting identity and social interaction. In my paintings, glasses are not only visual elements that highlight the subject’s image but also symbols of individuality and the perception of others.
My relationship with glasses is deeply personal. As a child, glasses served as a device to hide my insecurities. This formative experience shaped my psychological perspective and creative direction. In my work, glasses serve a dual function: “to be seen clearly” and “to see clearly.” This duality mirrors the complex psychology that exists between external gaze and self-expression.
Through this lens, glasses become more than just a visual device—they become symbolic gateways for exploring how we perceive and present ourselves and others. My paintings delve into introspection and external awareness, inviting a nuanced reading of identity, emotion, and perception.
I use iconic figures, personal memories (including childhood pets), and art-historical references to build whimsical, dreamlike worlds. Series such as Don’t Stop Along the Way (a parody of The Beatles’ Abbey Road), INNER GAZE (featuring renowned artists), and You’ve Done Well Today (inspired by my dog) explore glasses as a bridge between the personal and the universal, between reality and imagination.
