This picture is the extension of "Passion" or said the other way around, "Passion" is a picture detail from "113 currants". At that time I had chosen the detail from the arrangement so that the passion fruit was the "star" of the picture, because I was interested in the challenge to paint this fruit. And painting this fruit actually turned out to be a challenge. Just at the limit of my technical abilities, this fruit took all my concentration.
More than a year later, I looked again at the photos of this arrangement and realized that the whole "food pattern" would appeal to me. On the one hand I would have the opportunity to paint the passion fruit again and on the other hand I could face the challenge of the pineapple.
No sooner said than done and indeed, the passion fruit came much easier to me this time and the pineapple was the challenge I suspected it would be. The complex structure of the pineapple demanded the utmost concentration from me even as I was sketching it, and the unexpected colors (especially the leaves) kept me busy for many hours.
Sometimes I painted only a few square centimeters in one session and was at the end with my concentration. This is exactly the way I find working like this very meditative. I never feel myself as much as I do while painting. Completely immersed in details (or better: in colored areas), I feel the greatest satisfaction.
What is it about the 113 currants? There's not one of them in the photograph, but since they're my absolute favorite fruit to paint and they matched in color and made me happy with every single berry. And there are exactly 113 berries.
