The Treachery of History by April Claggett Image: The clash of cultures and the dream of power. I grew up seeing ‘history paintings’ of treaties with the "Indians", those serene templates of false equivalences (at least when it came down to justice and human rights). In reading up on the history of South Africa, the power brokering and braided alliances among tribes and colonizers seemed to cause nothing but pain and violence as well. This tribal king was inspired by a sojourn to Eswatini, and the colonizer in his classic European garb could be anywhere on the globe, aloof and pro-forma. Obviously here in its own equivalence, I was struck by the "trappings" of each.
