This pot comes from the San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico. This pot is a typical vessel of the San Ildefonso, characteristic of the black shiny exterior that both San Ildefonso and Santa Clara share. This artist, Juan Tafoya, was a friend of the donor and has several pieces in the gallery's collection. The donor also mentions that San Ildefonso is unique in its ability to produce black and brown pots, and pots using both colors, by mixing the colors during the firing process. That process can be seen in the rim of this pot, bearing both brown and black pigments. The base is signed "Juan Tafoya, San Ildefonso Pueblo, 1993."
