This vessel is characteristic of the Santa Clara tribe in New Mexico. The polished black exterior with the deeply incised design at the top of the vessel match the kind of craftsmanship seen in Santa Clara pottery. This kind of pottery was also common among the San Ildefonso tribe which resided near the Santa Clara. The bottom of this vessel is signed with the artist's name and tribe.
