MessageThis vessel comes from the San Ildefonso tribe of New Mexico. They are traditionally known for their polychrome black on red pottery, however, in the case of this vessel, it is a polished monochrome black with two colored stones. Some of the practices for this vessel are similar to other tribes. For example, the Santa Clara tribe of New Mexico also are known for the polished black surfaces of their clay wares and their incised designs. The subject matter is also characteristic of most other tribes who used natural subjects for their design elements. The unique aspect to this vessel are the stones, one red and one aqua. they are placed on the front of the vessel to complete the image that is inscribed on the vessel. The bottom of the vessel is signed with the artist's name, tribe, and a year (1991).
