Spreading the Blame at Anderson is a humorous collage designed by artist Warren Linn for a specific editorial. In this collage, a large man is being carried away by smaller figures up and out of the frame, a powerful visual metaphor for collective responsibility and the fragmentation of identity. The handwritten note beneath the artwork explains the work as a specific historical moment: the fallout from the Enron scandal and the role of Arthur Andersen LLP, the accounting firm implicated in the controversy. The central figure is composed of multiple faces and arms and may symbolize the diffusion of accountability, where no single person or entity bears full responsibility. The act of carrying—performed by faceless, anonymous figures—underscores the weight of complicity and the collective nature of systemic failure. This piece can be interpreted as a commentary on corporate ethics, media influence, and the human tendency to deflect blame.
Warren Linn worked from the 1960s through 2010 as an illustrator for virtually every major North American print media client.
