Williamsport, PA
The Gallery at Penn College hosts a rotating schedule of solo, group, and traveling exhibitions, and is free and open to the public year-round.
MessageThis vessel comes from the Santa Clara nation in New Mexico. Santa Clara pottery is known for its shiny black exteriors and carved or incised designs. In the case of this vessel, there is an incised design on a bear paw. In the center of the paw is a turquoise inlaid stone. This fits with the reoccurring theme of natural images and symbolism in Southwestern Native American pottery as a whole. The bottom of the vessel is signed "Nana Kaa" but this work may belong to the team of Andrew and Judith Harvier, who sign their vessels as such.
