This bowl comes from the Santa Clara nation in New Mexico. The Santa Clara are known for their polished black ceramics, such as this vessel. The designs are normally carved into the clay or incised on the surface. In the case of this vessel, the matte black designs offset the polished black exterior. The bottom of this vessel is signed "Mertes V. Linda" giving the artist's name.
