This ceramic figurine comes from the Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico. Acoma ceramics are known for their thin walls and black and white geometric designs. This figurine strays from that typical Acoma image, while still also managing to fit a few of the Acoma standards for pottery. In Acoma pottery, geometric designs are used to represent certain animals. In this example, there is a more literal representation of nature and animal life. The artist, Laura Vallo, also used traditional Acoma pigments such as black, white, and orange to complete this representation. This is a unique example of Acoma pottery and how it can stray in modern times from the traditional look and technique. The bottom of this figurine is signed "L.V., Acoma N.M."
