National Oxcart Parades celebrate Costa Rican culture and traditions. Teams of oxen (yuntas de bueyes) pull painted carts. Painted oxcarts are a national symbol of Costa Rica.

Oxen symbolize labor, sacrifice, and survival. Costa Ricans used to rely on their oxen to live. This reflects their deep connection to the land and their dependence on hard work to sustain their families. There is a fragility of the connection between humans and their means of survival.
