In the summer of 2022, I took a workshop on creating New Yorker style cartoons. I had never previously considered submitting cartoons to the New Yorker and signed up for the workshop because it was one of the first offerings of the then newly resuscitated iO Theater, the birthplace of longform improv and where I trained, which had shuttered its doors in the early days of the pandemic. As an oft-overwhelmed pandemic parent, I loved discovering, and sinking my tired teeth into, this new creative outlet that challenged me to let go of my perfectionism. I have been submitting single- and multi-panel cartoons to the New Yorker ever since. My proudest achievement so far is when I got a personal email rejection from one of the magazine's Daily Shouts editors inviting me to copy her on future submissions.
This was the first cartoon I drew after attending the cartooning workshop, inspired by my husband and son's chewed-up toothbrushes. The original drawing is done in black pen and pencil inside a 9.5"x7.5" Moleskine sketchbook.
