Recollections

Tiny shore birds parade across the beach in Janet Bourgeau’s woodblock print, Follow the Crowd. It shows a lightness and feeling that belies the complexity and exactness of the printing process. The other work in the collection, Ferns and Fiddleheads also reveals the artist’s interest in the complexity of nature.

Janet was born in 1941 in Sherbrooke Quebec and since then she has been passionate about art. In 1958 she moved to Montreal, where she attended University, receiving a Bachelor of Education and Physical Education.While living in Windsor with her husband, Angus Bourgeau, and family she enrolled in the Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Windsor; however, her husband was transferred and they moved to North Bay. Here she flourished in the thriving visual arts community.

Although Janet has worked in many media – from oils to quilted landscapes, it is printmaking that is her passion. She enjoys the complexity of the process, the wood carving, the necessity of methodical planning, the layering of the work. Janet says she was inspired by Anne Meredith Barry's workshops on mixed media and printmaking, as well as her father, who was a commercial printer. She also says that David Milne, David Blackwood and Patterson Ewen were also influences on her work.

Janet has in her turn inspired others to experiment with print-making and is an untiring guide and teacher of the process. Living in North Bay, with its similar physical landscape to the Eastern Townships where she was raised, has inspired Janet's art. Janet now describes her work as becoming simpler and more vivid because of the use of exaggerated colours for landscapes. Various experiences, such as a visit to Ireland or a trip to Lake Superior, have stretched her imagination and influenced her art. Between 1981 and 2005 she received eleven grants from the Ontario Arts Council and in all those years she had exhibited her art in many art galleries throughout Canada.

Janet shared some of her thoughts on being an artist in northern Ontario saying; "Unlike the fierce competition in larger southern centres, here, there are many opportunities open to emerging artists to network, exhibit and enter juried competitions."Janet

L’autre œuvre dans la collection, Ferns and Fiddleheads [Fougères et crosses de fougères], dénote aussi un intérêt marqué pour la complexité de la nature.

Janet se passionne pour les arts depuis son enfance passée à Sherbrooke, Québec. Alors qu’elle habitait Windsor avec son mari et sa famille, elle s’est inscrite à la faculté des Beaux-Arts de l’Université de Windsor; toutefois, à la suite du transfert de son mari, elle s’est retrouvée à North Bay où elle a pris du métier au sein d’une communauté artistique en pleine effervescence.

Bien qu’elle ait abordé plusieurs disciplines, de la peinture à l’huile au textile appliqué, c’est la gravure sur bois qui s’est avérée sa passion. Elle aime particulièrement la complexité du processus, la sculpture à même le bois, la nécessité d’une planification méthodique et la minutieuse manœuvre de superposition des estampes. Elle dit que les ateliers d’Anne Meredith Barry en gravure et médium mixte l’ont gravement inspirée, tout comme son père, lui-même imprimeur de son état. Elle ajoute encore les noms des artistes David Milne, David Blackwood et Patterson Ewen parmi les influences sur son œuvre.
Janet est à son tour une source d’inspiration en gravure expérimentale par son rôle de guide et de maître en la matière.

Établie à North Bay, dont les environs rappellent les Cantons de l’Est où elle a grandi, elle s’est inspirée de cet environnement dans ses œuvres. Son cheminement l’a conduit à plus de simplicité et d’éclat en accentuant les couleurs dans la représentation des paysages. D’autres expériences, comme son voyage en Irlande ou au lac Supérieur, ont stimulé encore davantage son imagination et influencé son travail.

Être artiste dans le nord de l’Ontario. À l’opposé de la concurrence féroce des grands centres du sud, il existe ici de grandes possibilités pour l’artiste en début de carrière d’échanger avec ses pairs, d’exposer ses œuvres et de participer à des expositions-concours.
