Recent Acquisitions:

Maureen Steward’s art is in a variety of media – acrylics, collage, woodblock and mono-print. She works most commonly in acrylics. Her work is influenced both by her deep love of her native Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and her adopted land of northern Ontario.

In Bulawayo, Maureen grew up with a love for drawing and colour. Maureen studied at the Bulawayo School of Art completing a three year course in art and design. After her college years, Maureen was employed in a cross-section of commercial art related positions in advertising, children’s book illustration, retail and department store art, promotional departments, and as a design manager at a national tableware manufacturer.

Married with three sons, she often found herself volunteering for school projects such as painting stage sets for plays, teaching art and designing exhibits. Painting outdoors with fellow artists surrounded by the wild beauty of the African bush was an activity that Maureen enjoyed since her teenage years.

In 1990, shortly after emigrating to Canada, Maureen, her husband and children settled in Haileybury, Ontario, where she found a place where she could fit in and pursue her art. She joined the Temiskaming Palette and Brush Club. During her years in Canada she has had works in the Northern Ontario Art Association, gained her NOAA letters, and won several awards. She and Lionel Venne had a joint exhibition that went to several galleries including the Kennedy Gallery in North Bay. More recently she had a show of prints with Janet Bourgeau and Penny Bateman, at Englehart Museum, Kirkland Lake Museum of Northern History, the Kennedy Gallery in North Bay and the Temiskaming Art Gallery. Maureen has been the Director/Curator of the Temiskaming Art Gallery for fifteen years. She also has taught many art workshops for all ages for the Gallery, the Temiskaming Palette and Brush Club and Cobalt Artists Colony among others. She continues to create art for exhibitions and for her own pleasure. TAG holds two works by Maureen, The House Dreams and Lost in this Moment.

Being an artist in northern Ontario. Immigrating to northern Ontario from Zimbabwe in 1990 changed my painting palette from the earth tones and brilliant sunbathed colours of my native country to soft blues and greens. On arriving here, I was delighted to find myself in a community where artists were active, willing to collaborate, share ideas and network with each other.

L’œuvre artistique de Maureen Steward s’exprime en une variété de disciplines — acrylique, collage, bois de gravure et monotype. Elle travaille surtout à l’acrylique. Son œuvre est influencée par son amour profond pour son Bulawayo natal, au Zimbabwé, et pour sa terre d’adoption, le nord de l’Ontario.

À Bulawayo, Maureen a grandi dans l’amour du dessin et des couleurs. Elle a suivi un cours de trois ans en art et graphisme à la School of Art de Bulawayo. Après son collège, elle a été employée comme dessinatrice publicitaire touche-à-tout, ses fonctions consistant en un croisement de plusieurs tâches reliées plus ou moins à la publicité artistique allant de l’illustration de livres pour enfants jusqu’à la conception graphique pour produits de magasins à rayons.

Mariée et mère de trois fils, elle s’est souvent portée volontaire aux activités scolaires, soit pour peindre les décors d’une pièce de théâtre, soit pour donner des cours d’arts plastiques, soit pour monter des expositions. L’une des activités les plus chères depuis son adolescence était les excursions de peinture en plein air en compagnie de confrères artistes, entourés de la beauté sauvage de la brousse africaine.

En 1990, peu après avoir émigré au Canada, Maureen, son mari et leurs enfants sont venus s’établir à Haileybury, Ontario, une localité où elle a pu facilement s’intégrer et poursuivre sa carrière artistique. Elle est devenue membre du Temiskaming Palette and Brush Club. Depuis son arrivée au Canada, elle a exposé ses œuvres à l’Association des artistes du nord de l’Ontario, gagné ses lettres AANO, et remporté plusieurs prix. En société avec Lionel Venne, elle a organisé une exposition itinérante de leurs œuvres conjointes qui a fait le tour des galeries, dont la Galerie Kennedy de North Bay. Plus récemment, elle a fait partie avec Janet Bourgeau et Penny Bateman d’une exposition d’estampes qu’ont accueillie le Musée d’Englehart, le Musée d’histoire nord-ontarienne de Kirkland Lake, la Galerie Kennedy de North Bay et la Galerie d’art du Témiskaming. Maureen est conservatrice et directrice-générale de la Galerie d’art du Témiskaming depuis quinze ans. Elle a animé plusieurs ateliers d’art pour tous les âges, entre autres à la galerie, au Temiskaming Palette and Brush Club et à la Colonie d’artistes de Cobalt. Elle continue à produire en vue d’expositions futures mais surtout pour son propre plaisir.

Être artiste dans le nord de l’Ontario. À mon arrivée ici du Zimbabwé en 1990, j’ai été enchantée d’y découvrir une communauté artistique très active, ouverte aux collaborations et aux échanges entre pairs. En immigrant dans le nord de l’Ontario de mon Zimbabwé natal, les couleurs terre et les tons brillants baignés de soleil de mon pays d’origine ont cédé la place à la douceur des teintes bleues et vertes.
